In Up the Stairs, Behind the Doors, Through the Window, the Croatian dancer Zrinka Šimičić Mihanović, Swiss animation artist Michaela Müller and New York-based sound artist Fa Ventilato elaborate on their cooperation started in 2012, with Trag/Trace/Spur, a performance produced in cooperation with the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art. The multimedia event combines live dance movement, paint-on-glass animation and sound.
Trag/Trace/Spur (2012) served as the layout for Up the Stairs, Behind the Doors, Through the Window, chasing the primordial human need to leave traces in a constantly changing world.
In their new project Müller, Šimičić Mihanović, and Ventilato juxtapose the longing for the comfort of a homely shelter with the urge to break out of constricting familiar confines, looking for escape routes.
Exploring the possibilities of the three media combined, the three artists have developed a technique that allows them to go beyond a mere multimedia experiment, and to evoke possible narratives around space and structure.
The performances feature selected special guests, such as Croatian artists Tanja Minarik (video), Ema Abadžijeva (English horn) and Branko Nikolić (prepared piano). The Swiss opera director Alvaro Schoeck will collaborate with the trio from a conceptual point of view.
